Sizing by what is actually coming out

The useful way to estimate a renovation bin is by material rather than by room count.

Bulky and light — cabinetry, framing lumber, drywall, insulation, carpet, underlay, panelling. These fill volume fast without approaching a weight limit, so go by cubic capacity and size up.

Dense and heavy — tile, plaster, concrete, mortar bed, granite or quartz countertop, cast iron tubs, mixed shingle. These hit legal haul weight while the bin still looks half empty. A smaller bin filled properly is the right answer.

Most renovations are a mix, which is why a 15 yard is the common starting point and a swap covers the overflow.

Timing the bin around demolition day

The single biggest volume spike in any renovation is demolition. If you have the bin delivered the day before demo starts, that first push fills a large part of it immediately.

The sequence that works well: bin delivered before demo, full bin swapped a day or two after demo finishes, second bin sits for the remainder of the build absorbing packaging, offcuts and the slower trickle of material.

The sequence that goes wrong: bin delivered on demo morning, full by lunchtime, trades stacking debris in the driveway for two days while a haul is arranged. Booking the swap in advance avoids that entirely.

Asbestos: check before you demolish

This matters in Calgary because of the housing stock. Homes built before roughly 1990 commonly contain asbestos in vinyl floor tile and the mastic under it, sheet flooring backing, drywall joint compound, textured ceiling coating, pipe and duct insulation, and vermiculite attic insulation.

Asbestos-containing material cannot go into a disposal bin. It has to be removed by a licensed abatement contractor and disposed of through the proper channel, and it needs to happen before general demolition starts rather than after someone has already put a hammer through it.

We will not accept it in a bin and we will say so if we see something on a site that looks like it needs testing first. Testing is inexpensive relative to the cost of getting this wrong.
